But much is this same f***ing dealer in Portland that scoops up any decent Tacoma, puts a lift on them, and then adds 8 grand to the price because LIFT AND SPIT SHINE.

Oh well. And now pre-Tacoma pickups 4x4 (‘89-’95) are showing up on BaT? Just a matter time before 2011 Rangers manual 4x4 start showing the up there, too.

The pre-Tacoma was still a Hilux, so worth it :p

The Tacoma is a slightly-cheapened Hilux

At least the mechanical dial odometer will roll over to zero after a million. For some stupid reason, Toyota makes their digital odometers stop at 999999 WTF Why the FUCK do they do that? What’s wrong with rolling over to zero?

(to be fair, Toyota isn’t the only one who does that)

I keep half looking for a truck but just Tacoma or ranger size and everytime it just makes me sad. I don’t need a big truck. My brother has an 03 tundra and I’m too short to get my kayak on the roof rack at the put in or take out. I want a smallish 4x4 that can haul kayaks and go down washed out roads without spending 10-20k

This is true, but none of it compares to pre-emissions (tier IV) com pact tractors with cabs with A/C and remote hydraulic valves. 40-60hp Machines from the early 20-teens with several thousand hours on them are selling for 15-30% above new cost. Shibaura N 84( x) engined machines from Case and New Holland command a special rape-me-up-the-ass premium, but even Kubotas, Mahindras and pre-tier IV-Y anmar-powered machines from John Deere and TYM are out of this plan e of reality.

Does it help to tell you that a 2010 Toyota Hilux 4x2 dual cab hi-rider with a manual gearbox and anything between 150 and 300,000 km on the clock can be had for about AU $10,000?

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2009-Toyota-Hilux-Workmate-Manual-4x2-MY10-Dual-Cab/SSE-AD-6314100?pageSource=details&id=SSE-AD-6314100

Kinja'd!!!

However...if you want the same thing in 4x4...oh boy. You are looking at at least double that. Even for one clearly broken like this one!

I remember watching a show some time ago, about guys fixing up old Massey Ferguson tractors (some of the earliest with three point hitches).  Are machines like that still comparatively low priced?

If they are petrol-powered, yes... But even 60-year-old diesel Fergusons and Fords and Cases and Olivers are worth $10000+ if they run well and have a remote hydraulic service valve (and a modern three-point hitch... Machines with just drawbars can be had very c heap, even the collectible  stuff like two-cylinder John Deeres) . Resale value of tractors makes cars and trucks look like a children’s game.

I was pricing 2020 Tacomas earlier today - you can build a decent 2wd king cab with steel wheels, the 2.7 cyl and 334k less miles for about $28k...

A local search revealed very few 4x4 Tacomas under $8,000, though there were a few 180,000 miles examples around that price. And this very good deal on a manual and I think it is a 4x4

Kinja'd!!!

Also, asking for a friend here, they made these? There was a step side Tacoma?

Early Nissan Pathfinder a or their Infiniti brethren are worth a look. Some aftermarket and capable platforms but pretty cheap even for a 4x4.

I’ve been in one recently and thought about it but my biggest thing for leaning towards a truck is wet gear. Whether that be wet kayak gear or having to take down a tent in the rain and toss it in the back ( all of which has happened recently) I just feel like a truck with a shell or at least a  tonn eau cover is the way to go.

Yes, I certainly know what you mean. Replacing the rear carpeting with something else could produce a similar effect, but it isn’t really the same. The early Pathfinders are still my recommendation if you don’t have to have a perfect y stock and good condition cargo area.

Is that because of all the stupid added tech and cost raping from maintenance I’ve been reading about that companies like John Deere, etc. have been doing to their newer stuff that everyone wants the older stuff that is more basic and easier/less ridiculously expensive to work on?

Probably because you can’t then pass off a 1.3 million mile vehicle as having 300k miles.

Not that this problem seems likely to be a common one.

I was planning on this truck staying in the family for 15+ years, but I’m wondering if I should take advantage of the crazy demand for used cars right now to take the cash...

I pretty much never sell cars, so I know the answer, but still.

I don’t really like 1 gen tacomas. They are slow, noisy and tiny. Paying 17 grand for one just because it has a rear locker is insane. Especially with those miles and when the “brand new MT’s” are Brand
